  Murder in the Cathedral (Chess at Barnes & Noble)

  i sat with my board and pieces like a new orleans hooker in a window with a red light, displaying my wanton intentions--eager for action.. last evening in barnes & noble.tuesdays the chess club meets there.. i arrived with my infamous black bag of pawns and rooks and other deadly concealed weapons of regicide--an old warrior in a strange land.. presently, a mother and her son stepped forward.

  he was about 12.____mother: “oh, sir--my son has become obsessed with the game of chess and i thought if hecould play some real games with experienced players he might enjoy that.

  would it be okay if kevin played a game with you?”.

  Governing Body pre-'70s: All Shareholders?

  i used to think that before the governing body was introduced in the 1970's as we know it today, that they used that term for the 7-member board of directors.

  but the article written by milton henschel in the '50s that was just posted showed another angle.

  apparently all shareholders were the "governing body" and the board was their representative, just like later they would say that all anointed ones were the faithful slave and the gb was their representative.. the governing body at present has 402 members, who reside in 29 countries and elect seven ministers as a board of directors.

  Non-profits can have what are properly called shareholders, although they don't receive any profits.

  As long as there is the WT Society of Pennsylvania there will be shareholders, it's a corporation. They conduct the voting in private separate from the public portion of the annual meeting. At this year's, the chairman even announced that all shareholders and their guests were getting a free meal. The GB has been completely separated from the corporation since 2001, when any remaining GB members who were on the board stepped down. All I'm wondering about is the etymology of "governing body" as used by JWs at that time.

Apparently all shareholders were the "governing body" and the board was their representative, just like later they would say that all anointed ones were the faithful slave and the GB was their representative.

  The governing body at present has 402 members, who reside in 29 countries and elect seven ministers as a board of directors. The board chooses one director as president.

  Guilt trip

  did anyone have other jws try to guilt trip them when they were leaving or if you were making a decision which jws felt was wrong but wasn't unscriptural?

  i'm getting people guilt tripping me to eventually get back with my emotionally, spiritually and mentally abusive husband who i'm separated from.

  i feel sick at the thought of getting back together and putting myself through that nightmare again but i'm being told its what jehovah wants coz he doesn't want families to be apart.

  Guilt trips are par for the course, that's one of the biggest parts of being JW and how they keep control. Some of my earliest childhood memories are feelings of dread based on guilt, and even as an adult I experienced a couple dreams relating to this.

  so far, i’ve only gone to my mother’s memorial and have avoided the kingdom hall altogether.... your thoughts please?.

  Manmade rules

  i was talking to someone a few years ago and he said in his congregation they have a rail of white shirts prepared in the cloakroom for if a speaker doesn't have a white shirt on.

  it was a rule in their hall that all brothers in the platform must wear white shirts when going talks and if the speaker won't comply when asked to change into the shirt they provide an elder in the congregation will do the talk instead.

  i have never known any other halls do it so it must be a rule the elders have made up without gb input.

  Yup I had a CO too who banned Jean skirts, gave a talk about it. They still require suits for privileges. Once I forgot and was relieved from mikes part way through. Another time I forgot and gave my talk anyway.
